Aside from a few fur traders, the St'át'imc people were the only residents of their territory until the gold rush of 1858. The gold rush brought tens of thousands of miners to St'át'imc territory. The town of Lillooet was established as the staging ground for miners travelling to the Cariboo and it boomed for a few years until 1863 when the new Cariboo wagon road bypassed Lillooet. Although the town was nearly deserted by 1863, it slowly grew again and has almost 3,000 residents today.

The following historic photos are all from the town of Lillooet.
