The Mohawk peoples are part of the Iroquois League of Nations; their traditional territory is located in eastern-central New York State. Due to conflict between the English and French in the mid 17th to 18th centuries, many Mohawks moved to areas of French Canada in relation to Jesuit missionary influence. Mohawks who sided with the British acquired land along the Grand River. 1
