Cowichan
The Cowichan peoples are located on Vancouver Island in the Cowichan Valley and in Duncan. However, many Cowichan people today also live in cities all over British Columbia and across the globe. They are a Nation among the many different Coast Salish peoples of British Columbia and Washington State. Some of the Cowichan artists in the University of Victoria's Art Collections include Manuel Salazar, Johnnie Delmar, Edward Joe, and Joseph M. Wilson.
The Cowichan Tribes, a member of the Hulq'qumi'num Treaty Group, is composed of seven traditional villages: Kw'anutsun, Qwu'yiqun, Hwulqiwsely, S'amuna, L'uml'umuluts, Hinupsum, Tl'ulpalus. The Cowichan peoples traditionally speak the dialect of Island Hul'qumi'num. 1
Hul’q’umi’num’, Halkomelem or Island Hul’qumi’num, is spoken by the Cowichan, Chemainus, Halalt, Lake Cowichan, Lyackson, and Penelakut First Nations all within the Southern Georgia Strait area. 2
