The Haida Nation resides in the territory of Haida Gwaii or what has previously been known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, in British Columbia. Their traditional territory encompasses areas of Southern Alaska and the archipelago of Haida Gwaii. Before colonization the population of the Haida community reached beyond the tens of thousands. 1
There are three main village sites for the Haida including Massett (Old Massett Village Council), Skidegate (Skidegate Band Council) and Hydaburg (Alaska). X̱aad Kil / X̱aaydaa Kil, or Haida is the language spoken by these communities although at one time it differed in dialect according to village. 2
There are a number of revered Haida artists in the University of Victoria's Art Collections. These include Clarence 'gahghinskuss' Mills, Robert and Reg Davidson, Gerry Marks, Bill Reid, Glen Rabena,Lyle Campbell, Francis Williams, Jaalen Edenshaw, Wayne Edenshaw, Wayne Young and Roy Henry Vickers. The collection is largely based in prints, however there is also a rich collection of sculptures, paintings and other media.
