VALENCIA. HALL OF LONJA DE LA SALA

Bayne’s sketch of the interior of the Lonja de la Sala shows the twisted palm columns supporting the vaulted ceiling. A number of figures provide a sense of scale. Bayne has included a detail of the plan of the hall in the upper left with the number of the drawing. His monogram is in the lower left and the date and location are in the lower right corners.

VALENCIA. LONJA DE SEDA

Bayne’s drawing of the Casa Lonja, or Silk Exchange, has watercolour details on the flag. A number of figures on the street in front of the building give a sense of scale. The drawing can be compared to an engraving by Street and a photograph from Ars Hisp. VII, which show changes in the building over time. Street’s engraving indicates that the upper storey windows once had pointed arches and were being modified by closing off the upper part to make them simple rectangles. In addition, he shows a clock in the upper central façade. Bayne’s sketch shows that the clock has been removed, and the upper central façade extended. The later photograph confirms the removal of the clock with its replacement by a window. The upper central façade has been further revised by the addition of crenelations. Bayne’s drawing has the number in the upper left, his monogram in the lower left, and the date and location in the lower right.
