The drawing shows a Byzantine church in a street. There are four figures in the drawing for scale. The blue sky, brown roof tiles and ground have faded, and there is a glue stain from the paper adhering to the reverse. The date and number are in the upper left corner. Bayne's monogram is in the lower left. "Athens" is written in the lower right.

In this sketch, Bayne has combined two separate drawings. The main sketch is the detail of a doorway with an inscription above. In the upper right, he has sketched a vase with flowers. There is a larger building behind, very lightly sketched. In addition to the number and date, "22.4.5," found in the upper left, the drawing has been identified in the lower right: "Athens. Col. above Temple at [...] of the Dionysiac Theatre. Piraeus beyond." Blue wash has been used for the sky and water, with orange-brown for the columns and buttresses of the Acropolis. Brown has been used with olive green for the plants. A glue stain is visible in the centre of the drawing. Bayne's monogram is in the lower left.
